Tucked away in the quiet hills of Penha Longa, just an hour's drive from Porto, lies a romantic hideaway made for two: Javalina. This thoughtfully restored cottage sits high above the Douro Valley, with panoramic views that shift with the light. Sun-drenched by day, glowing golden by dusk. Javalina is a place where time slows down and every moment feels intentionally lived.
A Renovation project taken on by owners Marianne and Vitor, who share a deep love for nature, old spaces, and meaningful design. What once stood as an old stone cottage has been lovingly transformed. It’s original structure and rustic charm have been preserved, while layers of comfort and craftsmanship have been gently woven through. Portuguese artisanship is at the heart of the home, with local makers and materials bringing a quiet authenticity to every corner.
The cottage itself is a dream in natural stone and soft blue hues, with traditional terracotta roof tiles and sunlit doors that welcome in the golden glow of the valley. Surrounded by nature, birdsong, and fresh air, it’s a haven of peace. The natural saltwater pool, framed by ancient trees and endless sky, is the perfect place to float, dip your toes, or read with the sound of the breeze gently turning the pages.
Available all year round is the outdoor bath. Made from natural stone and fitted with brass taps, whether it's a slow start to your day or the soft close of evening, this is a truly immersive experience in nature and stillness.
Each morning, a fresh breakfast hamper is delivered to your doorstep, packed with the best local Portuguese goods, including warm pastries, fruit, yoghurt, and fresh juice. The locally handmade terracotta ceramics create the idyllic table scape, and everything tastes a little better for it. It’s the perfect way to welcome the day, bathed in morning sunlight and wrapped in birdsong, inside or out.
Inside, soft luxury meets rustic soul. A beautiful wooden staircase leads to the simple but elegantly designed bedroom. A king-sized bed with handwoven cushions and tapestry dressing the wall welcomes you. The balcony overlooking the valley offers a peaceful spot to enjoy the first tea or coffee in the morning. This is just one of several outdoor seating areas at Javalina, all designed to invite pause, connection, and presence.
Marianne and Vitor have ensured every detail speaks of care and intention. From the striped yellow and white tiles in the shower that bring pure joy, to the handpicked antique furniture, barn doors, and natural linens. The kitchen, with its dark blue shaker cabinetry, is understated and beautiful. Complemented by an antique writers desk turned dining table, dressed with a pastel de nata waiting for you.
As a designer myself, The interior design details are exquisite. The perfectly layered lighting that shifts with the mood and the grout that has been matched to the tones of the walls and window frames, a testament to the thoughtful, intentional design that flows through every inch of the space.
Javalina isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a feeling. A sun-kissed pause. A slow, golden chapter in your story. One you’ll want to return to again and again.
