Casa Âmago - A slow and sun filled stay in the Algarve.
Portugal, especially the Algarve, had long felt like a second home to owners Alex and Liz. What began as a place they returned to time and time again soon became somewhere they felt deeply pulled towards making permanent. Tired of the fast pace of London life, they dreamt of something slower, softer, and more intentional, and so, the journey of Casa Amago began.
Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, Casa Amago Uma Casa Lenta is a 6 bedroom guest house located surprisingly just a 15-minute drive from Faro Airport, though you would never know it. The soundtrack here is one of birdsong, rustling trees, and the gentle stillness of nature…a world away from the rush of everyday life.
I was kindly invited to stay for two nights to experience and capture the slow, sun-soaked rhythm of life at Amago (pinch me). From the moment I arrived, it felt like stepping into a space designed to encourage pause; where mornings are unhurried, afternoons melt into golden light, and every detail invites you to slow down and simply be.
On arrival, Alex welcomed us with a glass of natural wine in the communal lounge — a chance to sit, breathe, and hear the story of how Casa Amago came to be. It's a detail that sets the tone immediately; this is a place run by people who genuinely want you to feel at home.
The lounge itself is a beautiful space to linger. A large burnt orange linen sofa anchors the room in that same deep terracotta warmth that runs throughout the property, while the walls are dressed with artwork from artists Alex and Liz have worked with personally through their artist in residency programme. A selection of travel and design books are arranged on the coffee table and surrounding shelves — the kind that invite you to pick one up, sink into the sofa, and lose an hour without a second thought.
I was staying in Room 1, a picturesque guest suite whose exterior is framed by lush greenery, fresh sage green doors, and white plaster walls offset by terracotta tiles. A wooden ladder leans against the wall , perfectly placed for draping yellow-striped towels and damp bikinis after an afternoon by the pool. Outside the door, a sunlounger sits waiting; the ideal spot to crack open a Superbock and ease gently into the evening before dinner.
The interior puts you at ease instantly. Whitewashed walls and traditional Portuguese rafters line the ceiling . All washed in the same soft white, creating a calm, cohesive canvas for everything beneath. Textiles in earthy tones feature organic embroidery, warm terracottas, soft ochres and deep greens, a palette echoed in the artwork, all sourced from local artisans and artists. Light-washed oak shelving displays beautiful ceramics that bring back pops of brighter coral terracotta, while black side tables and a dressing table ground the space, contrasting beautifully against the brightness around them.
The lightness carries through into the en-suite bathroom. A large walk-in shower with white gloss ceramic tiles and a generous vanity, perfect for laying out cosmetics. A small piece of artwork ties it all back to the feeling of Casa Amago. Ours featured a print reading 'later we'll go to the beach', rendered in the same greens and ochres as the bedroom. A small detail, but one that made me smile every time I caught it.
The pool area is nothing short of paradise. Alex and Liz carefully planned the planting to blossom into a lush, living escape. Various shades of green contrasting against the bright blue sky and the turquoise water below, with vivid pops of orange from birds of paradise flowers planted with clear intention. The greenery doesn't stop at the pool, either; it surrounds the entire property, every turn and path enveloped in it. In the very best way.
One of the most memorable parts of any stay at Casa Amago is breakfast, and it deserves its own mention. Each morning, the tables are set outside, and you settle into the kind of slow, sun-warmed start that most of us have forgotten how to have. Birdsong, a gentle breeze, no particular reason to rush.
The spread itself is generous and thoughtfully prepared by Alex and Liz themselves every morning. Fresh pastries including mini pastel de nata, granola, yoghurt, fruit, nuts and seeds, cheese and ham. For something warmer, Liz will cook eggs just how you like them; scrambled, fried, or poached, made to order and served with toast.
It's the kind of breakfast that feels like an act of care, and that's exactly what it is. Alex and Liz take the time to check in, ask about your plans for the day and offer local recommendations, nothing pushy, just genuine warmth from people who clearly love what they do.
Days here are spent exactly as they should be. Mornings by the pool, coffee in hand. An afternoon siesta when the heat calls for it. A short drive to the coast for the day, or timed perfectly for sunset, the evening light along this stretch of the Algarve is something else entirely.
Everything done slowly, without a rush. Just as it should be.
